2001-02-28 Reed Yard Derailment

Reed Yard Wide Gage Derailment February 2001

This was a minor derailment in a Class 1 Yard. Wide gage happens everywhere, even on the big railroads. This one took place on the lead in Norfolk Southern Reed Yard with an I&O local crew.  After rerailing the cars, it was clear that the tie plates were moving out almost an inch under load. The almost 60 inch gage was after the derailment, even so, that is a far cry from 56 1/2 inch it is supposed to measure. A set of rerailers took care of getting the car back on the track. It took longer to fill out all of the paperwork then it did to rerail. One good thing, I did get a half decent picture of I&O 87.
